Introduction to the Dyson PencilVac

It has been nearly a decade since Dyson first introduced its Supersonic hair dryer, which incorporated the company’s signature bladeless fan technology into a styling product. This move was unexpected at the time, given that Dyson was primarily known for its vacuums. Since then, the company has released several beauty tools, including the Airwrap curling iron, which has inspired numerous imitations. Additionally, Dyson has expanded into other categories, such as audio, with products like the OnTrac headphones and the Zone headphones with a built-in purifying mask, while continuing to produce some of the best cordless vacuums available.

The PencilVac: A Revolutionary Vacuum Cleaner

Today, Dyson is introducing the PencilVac, which it claims is the "world’s slimmest vacuum cleaner." The key to achieving this thinness lies in the use of a motor similar to the one found in the Supersonic hair dryer. The PencilVac’s design is distinct from existing vacuum cleaners, as it is essentially a long shaft with attachment options for the head, resulting in a sleek and compact device with no bulge, except when using the included conical brush bar cleaner head.

Features and Specifications of the PencilVac

The PencilVac features a range of innovative components, including a new Hyperdymium 140k motor, which is Dyson’s smallest and fastest vacuum motor, measuring just 28mm in diameter. The device also includes a dust compressing system to maximize bin capacity and a transparent window that allows users to see how full the bin is and watch as debris is sucked up. The PencilVac weighs approximately 3.96 pounds (1.8kg) and is designed for easy use in hard-to-reach areas, with a consistent diameter of roughly 1.5 inches (38mm) throughout, making it easy to grip and maneuver.

Performance and Maneuverability

In a brief hands-on demo, the PencilVac’s Hypderdymium 140k motor proved to be powerful, effortlessly suctioning up Cheerios, cookies, and other debris. The device was also relatively easy to maneuver, gliding smoothly over bumpy surfaces. However, the locking system required some practice to master, as it needed to be held precisely straight up and clicked into place to prevent the stick from falling to the ground.

Filtration System and Air-Compressing Bin Design

The PencilVac features a new filtration system that effectively separates dust and debris from airflow without clogging filters or compromising cleaning performance. The device also boasts a two-stage linear dust separation system, capturing 99.99% of particles down to 0.3 microns, ensuring that only clean air is expelled back into the home. The air-compressing bin design allows the bin to contain five times more dust and debris than its 0.08L capacity, making it an efficient and convenient cleaning solution.

Emptying the Bin and Maintenance

When it’s time to empty the container, the PencilVac’s hygienic syringe bin ejection system allows for easy and hygienic disposal of debris. The process involves removing the cleaner head, aiming the bottom of the PencilVac at a trash receptacle, and using a shucking motion to empty the contents. While this process seemed straightforward, some crumbs did get trapped in the housing, which can be detached and cleaned separately.

Connectivity and Battery Life

The PencilVac features a swappable battery pack that can last up to 60 minutes of suction and can be charged on a magnetic charging dock. As Dyson’s first connected cordless vacuum, it works with the MyDyson app, allowing users to monitor battery levels, access settings, and receive maintenance alerts. The device also features an LCD screen at the top of the handle, displaying the selected power mode and remaining run time.

Availability and Pricing

Although Dyson has not announced pricing details for the PencilVac, the device is expected to be available in the US in 2026, with retail availability in other regions forthcoming. With its revolutionary design, advanced features, and efficient performance, the PencilVac is set to make a significant impact in the world of vacuum cleaners.
