Today’s Nintendo Direct provided our first in-depth look at the upcoming Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, showcasing its visually stunning graphics. The game utilizes Square Enix’s HD-2D engine, the same technology used in last year’s Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake.
Although we were aware of the game’s development, we now have actual in-game footage to look forward to. As the title suggests, this game will feature remakes of the first two Dragon Quest titles, initially released in the 1980s. This is a welcome move, given that the first game is relatively short.
From a technical standpoint, Dragon Quest 3 serves as a prequel to the first two titles in the series. Therefore, this release schedule makes sense, as it will allow modern players to experience the entire Erdrick trilogy once the game is released.
While we still don’t have a specific release date, we know that the game is scheduled to launch later this year. It will be available on the Switch, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, which are the same platforms that Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake was released on. Notably, that game became a surprise hit for the company, with Square Enix announcing that it sold over two million units globally as of December. It also became the best-selling game in Japan throughout 2024.
