Following the excitement surrounding this summer’s How to Train Your Dragon film, Universal Pictures has announced that a sequel is in the works. Director Dean DeBlois is set to continue the franchise with How to Train Your Dragon 2, which has officially been given the green light. The cinematic sequel is slated for release on June 11, 2027.

The announcement was made by Universal Pictures at CinemaCon 2025, shortly after the early screening of How to Train Your Dragon received positive reactions on social media. Given the franchise’s existing goodwill, thanks to its beloved animated films, television series, and upcoming presence at Universal Studios Florida’s Epic Universe theme park, this development comes as no surprise, yet it’s still thrilling news.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 will continue the story of Hiccup as a dragon rider, exploring the ongoing pact between Vikings and dragons for mutual survival! We’re eager to find out who will join the cast, especially considering the significant role in the sequel that we hope will be played by the voice counterpart, similar to Gerard Butler’s role as Hiccup’s dad Stoick in the animated films.

The live-action How to Train Your Dragon film is set to release on June 13, with the sequel following on June 11, 2027.
