On Monday, Discord introduced its Discord Social SDK, a complimentary toolkit that enables developers to tap into the platform’s social infrastructure, thereby enhancing the social and multiplayer aspects of their games. This toolkit allows developers to enhance their in-game experiences for players, regardless of whether they have a Discord account or not.
The social integrations offered by the toolkit include a unified friends list, which enables players to access their Discord friends within the game and their in-game friends on Discord, making it simpler for them to stay connected both within and outside of the game. Additionally, the SDK provides deep-linked game invites, allowing players to invite their friends to join their party or lobby directly.
The communication features of the toolkit include cross-platform messaging, which allows players to converse across desktop, console, and mobile platforms. Other features include the ability to link in-game chats to specific Discord channels within their servers and voice chat capabilities.

“For game creators ranging from independent to AAA, Discord serves as the primary platform to connect with the world’s largest and most engaged community of players, thereby fueling the growth of their game before, during, and after its launch,” stated Stan Vishnevskiy, Discord’s co-founder and CTO, in a press release. “Game discovery and retention have never been more crucial, and we are excited to assist developers in growing their games by reaching gamers where they are most active.”
According to Discord, many developers are already utilizing the toolkit, including Theorycraft Games, Facepunch Studios, 1047 Games, Scopely, Mainframe Industries, Elodie Games, Tencent Games, and several others.
The Discord Social SDK is compatible with C++, Unreal Engine, and Unity, and supports Windows 11+ and macOS. The company has announced that support for console and mobile platforms will be added soon.
The platform boasts an impressive user base of over 200 million monthly active users who spend a combined total of 1.5+ billion hours playing games each month on PC alone.
