Over the past decade, the Destiny franchise has consistently looked to the future, whether it’s introducing new weapons, locations, or power scales. The next adventure for the Guardians is on the horizon, and it appears to be set in a distant galaxy.
Bungie recently hosted a livestream to unveil the upcoming Destiny 2 season, Edge of Fate, which launches on July 15. During the event, the company provided a sneak peek at the following season, Renegades. The surprise reveal showed a Star Wars crossover, featuring a Guardian wielding Han Solo’s iconic blaster and another igniting a lightsaber, accompanied by familiar text and a desert planet backdrop.
Destiny 2 has collaborated with various IPs in recent years, including Fortnite, The Witcher, and Mass Effect. The game’s previous Star Wars crossover was earlier this year, when players could purchase armor resembling Imperial Trooper gear. According to Bungie’s recap, Renegades is “inspired” by Star Wars and will play a key role in advancing the Fate Saga and the larger Destiny 2 narrative.
This crossover marks a significant departure from the game’s previous collaborations. The expansion’s scope raises questions about the future of Destiny 2 and Star Wars‘ gaming endeavors, particularly with the current in-game Fortnite event and the potential for mainline Star Wars games to be released at a steady pace. Are crossovers like this a way for Disney to maintain the franchise’s presence in the gaming world?
Destiny 2: Renegades will receive a full reveal on September 9, followed by its release on December 2.
