Director Scott Derrickson is teaming up once again with writer C. Robert Cargill, the duo behind the successful films Doctor Strange and The Black Phone, on their next project. This time, they are adapting Christopher Golden’s novel Road of Bones into a film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be produced under Sony’s Screen Gems label and will mark the first movie under the production banner Crooked Highway, further solidifying the partnership between Derrickson and Cargill. Notably, Golden, who penned the script for the upcoming Hellboy: The Crooked Man in 2024, will serve as an executive producer for Road of Bones.

Road of Bones, released in 2022, tells the story of the eponymous Siberian highway, which spans 1,200 miles and is known for its extreme temperatures that can drop to -60 degrees. The highway’s history is marked by the construction of over 80 gulags during Stalin’s regime, making it a subject of interest for documentary producer Felix “Teig” Teigland. As Teig travels the Road with his camera operator and a local guide, he delves into the culture and encounters the diverse people who inhabit the area, eventually reaching Oymyakon, dubbed the “coldest settlement on Earth.” There, he meets a young girl, and the situation takes a strange turn when a shaman summons forest spirits to hunt down the trio.

At this time, Sony has not announced a release date for Road of Bones, and no casting decisions have been made public. For fans of Derrickson and Cargill looking for a horror fix in the meantime, they can look forward to The Gorge (produced by Cargill) and the upcoming Black Phone sequel, scheduled for release on October 17.
