Renowned game industry veteran Stig Asmussen, known for directing notable titles such as God of War III, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and Fallen Order, is currently developing a single-player action-adventure game set within the expansive world of Dungeons & Dragons. This project is being undertaken in partnership with publisher Wizards of the Coast.
This marks the inaugural project for Asmussen’s studio, Giant Skull, since its establishment in late 2023. According to a press release shared with Engadget, Giant Skull is committed to “building gameplay-driven, story-immersed action-adventure games.” The new project is being developed on the Unreal 5 engine and is initially planned for release on PC, with details regarding console availability to be announced at a later date. As of now, no specific release dates, renderings, or game content have been shared, suggesting that the game’s release is unlikely to occur before 2026.
John Hight, President of Wizards of the Coast, the owning entity of the iconic tabletop RPG, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “Stig and the team at Giant Skull are precisely the kind of exceptionally talented creators we aim to work with, and I’m delighted to be reunited with him on this new project.” Stig Asmussen highlighted the studio’s objective to “craft a rich new Dungeons & Dragons universe filled with immersive storytelling, heroic combat, and exhilarating traversal that players will fully embrace.”
This new project emerges as Wizards of the Coast navigates its relationship with developer Larian Studios, the team behind the widely acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3. The Hasbro-owned publisher has a plethora of games in development in partnership with various studios across the United States and Canada. These upcoming titles include the sci-fi RPG Exodus, being developed by Archetype Entertainment, and Atomic Arcade’s Snake Eyes, based on the G.I. Joe franchise.
