Cujo is making a comeback to the big screen, and this time, it’s being helmed by a master of horror. Darren Aronofsky, the acclaimed director of Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, Black Swan, mother!, and The Whale, is in talks with Netflix to direct a new adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel about a deadly canine.

This news may come as a surprise, as it was only recently announced that Netflix was working on a new Cujo film, but at the time, no key players were attached to the project. However, with Aronofsky on board, the project is starting to take shape. He has a proven track record of delivering intense, thought-provoking films across various genres, which is likely to attract top talent. The InSneider was the first to break the news of Aronofsky’s involvement, which was later confirmed by multiple industry publications.

First published in 1981, King’s novel tells the story of a dog that contracts rabies after being bitten by a bat and subsequently goes on a violent killing spree. The book was adapted into a successful film in 1983, starring Dee Wallace from E.T., but this new adaptation promises to bring a fresh perspective to the story. Netflix’s Roy Lee, who has had success producing King’s stories, including both installments of It, is behind the new adaptation.

Although a writer has not yet been announced, which seems unusual given the director’s attachment, Aronofsky is known for his unwavering vision and unapologetic approach to storytelling. From his early days with Pi to his Oscar-winning work with Natalie Portman and Brendan Fraser, Aronofsky’s films are often visceral, intense, and emotionally charged. Combining his style with the dark, suspenseful elements of King’s novel could result in a truly unforgettable cinematic experience.

While there’s no guarantee that the project will move forward with Aronofsky at the helm, he is currently wrapping up work on a crime film called Caught Stealing, set to release this summer.
