The phenomenal success of The Penguin, as seen in its captivating storyline, has led many to assume a second season is inevitable. However, the show’s star, Colin Farrell, expresses some reservations about rushing into another season, citing concerns about maintaining the show’s quality.

Prior to its release, few could have predicted the overwhelming success of HBO’s The Penguin. This superhero show, which focuses on the rise of Batman’s notable villain, has not only received widespread acclaim from critics and fans alike but has also performed exceptionally well during awards season. Lead actors Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti, along with the show itself, have garnered multiple awards, making it a strong contender for the upcoming Emmys. These achievements would typically suggest a second season is on the horizon, but Farrell’s views on the matter are more nuanced.

Farrell shared his thoughts with Variety at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where he won Best Actor in a limited series for his role in the DC show. “I don’t not want it,” he stated. “We all gave it our all in those eight hours. I would hate to, just because of its success, have to do it again and end up with a diluted version of what people love about it. So, I’m in no rush. I don’t have a strong desire to do it… If they come up with an idea that complements Matt Reeves’ cinematic universe and it’s a good one, I’m open to it. But it’s not something that’s currently concerning me.”

The narrative of The Penguin seamlessly aligns with the conclusion of Reeves’ 2022 film, The Batman, and reportedly leads directly into the events of his 2027 film, The Batman Part II, where Farrell is set to appear. Therefore, even if a second season of The Penguin were to be considered, it would likely have to follow the release of the movie. Farrell’s stance on not rushing into another season makes sense in this context. It might be best to focus on the movie first, allowing the show to stand as the significant achievement it is, and then consider revisiting the character later.

The entire first season (and potentially the final season) of The Penguin is available to stream on Max.
