Box Office Update

The latest Marvel movie, Captain America: Brave New World, has kicked off the weekend with a solid start, setting a promising tone for Marvel’s 2025 lineup. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film has opened with a worldwide total of $192.4 million. Breaking this down, $92.4 million comes from international audiences, while $88.4 million is from the domestic market. With the extended four-day weekend, Brave New World is on track to surpass $100 million domestically, exceeding initial projections that ranged from $90 million to $96 million. This not only marks one of the best domestic openings over the President’s Day holiday but also the largest opening for any 2025 movie to date. It’s worth noting that Brave New World has achieved the highest opening among all Captain America films, outpacing the openings of The First Avenger ($65.1 million), The Winter Soldier ($95 million), and Civil War ($179.1 million).

Despite receiving mixed reactions from critics, the movie seems to be faring better with audiences, who have given it a B- Cinemascore, as noted by analyst Luiz Fernando. This score is reportedly the lowest ever for an MCU movie, highlighting the divide between critical and audience reception.

Other Notable Releases

Beyond the Marvel universe, other movies have seen significant movement over the weekend. Love Hurts and Heart Eyes, both from the previous week, experienced a boost coinciding with Valentine’s Day. Love Hurts added $4.4 million to its total, reaching a $12.3 million weekend take, while Heart Eyes gained an additional $10 million, bringing its second-weekend total to $21.5 million. Interestingly, Heart Eyes saw growth in its sophomore weekend, prompting director Josh Ruben to express gratitude to audiences for embracing "a different kind of horror movie" and for spreading the word.

Upcoming Releases

Marvel movies have a history of either maintaining momentum or losing steam after their opening weekends. The next big genre movie on the horizon is The Monkey, scheduled for February 21, followed by Mickey 17 on March 7. The performance of Captain America: Brave New World will be closely watched, especially with Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four waiting in the wings.
