If someone were to place a bet on which Avenger would make an appearance in Captain America: Brave New World, the clear frontrunner would be Bucky. The relationship between Bucky, portrayed by Sebastian Stan, and Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, has been a highlight of the Marvel universe for nearly a decade, dating back to the third Captain America film, Civil War. The two have been intertwined ever since, and their camaraderie was further showcased in the 2021 Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Thus, when Bucky appears at a pivotal moment in the new film, it’s a surprise that’s not entirely unexpected. His appearance was anticipated, with the only question being when it would occur. Apparently, the film’s creative team also grappled with this decision. Brave New World director Julius Onah told Variety that “there was always going to be a scene calling back to Sam’s history [in the MCU], and there were a few different permutations of it.” He added, “Bucky has always been there from the first draft that I was involved with, but in slightly different positions in the movie. The question just became what’s the most interesting and surprising way to see him?”
Onah explained that Bucky’s appearance was considered for various points in the movie, including the beginning and the end. However, the team ultimately decided on a scene that would be both surprising and emotionally resonant, helping to advance Sam’s story. In the film, Bucky arrives after the battle above Celestial Island, where Sam is tending to his injured friend, Joaquin (Danny Ramirez). Bucky offers words of comfort and encouragement, and it’s revealed that he’s running for a Congressional seat – one that he will have won by the time Thunderbolts is released.
The reunion between Sam and Bucky is a highlight of the film, bringing a sense of familiarity and warmth to the story. Their banter reminds audiences why they’ve grown to love these characters, and their interaction adds emotional depth to the movie. It’s a moment that leaves viewers hoping Sam will be able to return the favor with a cameo in Thunderbolts come May.
