A significant development has occurred that may impact the release date of Grand Theft Auto 6, as 2K has revised its plans for another game, Borderlands 4. The latest installment in Gearbox’s series will now launch on September 12, 11 days earlier than initially announced.

Following speculation about a potential delay, Gearbox co-founder and CEO Randy Pitchford stated that “the team has been working very hard, and everything is going great, actually. In fact, everything’s going kind of the best-case scenario. The game is awesome, and the team is cooking.” As a result, Gearbox and 2K have decided to move the release date forward. Gearbox explained that this decision was made after “a lot of meetings, playtesting, and incredible development work.”

Sony is hosting a dedicated State of Play for Borderlands 4 on April 30. The stream will run for approximately 20 minutes and can be watched on the PlayStation’s Twitch and YouTube channels at 5 PM ET.

Meanwhile, the revised release date for Borderlands 4 has sparked intense speculation about the potential implications for Grand Theft Auto 6. The latter is still scheduled to arrive this fall, and 2K will likely want to maintain a buffer of at least a few weeks to avoid cannibalizing Borderlands 4 sales. If the fall release window remains in place for GTA 6, it is likely to arrive in October or November, ensuring a release before Black Friday.

There have been reports that publishers and studios are delaying the announcement of release dates for their fall games to avoid clashing with GTA 6. Sony, however, has already locked in fall dates for major games, including Marathon, which will be released on September 23, and Ghost of Yōtei, which is slated to hit PS5 on October 2. It is possible that Sony, which is collaborating with 2K on promoting Borderlands 4, may have insider knowledge about the GTA 6 release date.
