The Prime Video series, Blade Runner 2099, has been in the works since its announcement in 2022. The production was delayed in 2023 due to the Hollywood strikes. However, the project has been moving forward, with Hunter Schaefer and Michelle Yeoh being cast as co-leads in 2024. The road to its release has been long, but recently, Tom Burke, who is also part of the cast, including a role in Furiosa, shared some insights into the series, offering fans a glimpse of what to expect.

Up until now, the only details known about Blade Runner 2099 were its setting in 2099, making it a sequel to both Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049, and that Michelle Yeoh would play a replicant nearing the end of her lifespan. In a recent interview with Variety, Burke discussed the series, noting that it is aesthetically more aligned with the first Blade Runner film than its sequel. He highlighted the series’ blend of cultures and time periods, describing it as having a “Baroque, eclectic mix.”

While Burke couldn’t reveal specific plot details, he did describe Blade Runner 2099 as “out there,” indicating a moment of surrender to the project’s unique vision. Thematically, the series appears to delve into the complexities of humanity, a common thread throughout the Blade Runner franchise and its precursor, Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Burke touches on the exploration of what defines humanity and the duality of human nature, suggesting that the series will navigate these morally nuanced themes with subtlety, a trait he believes is distinctive to the Blade Runner universe.

The cast of Blade Runner 2099 includes, alongside Schaefer, Yeoh, and Burke, Maurizio Lombardi, Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, and Matthew Needham. As of now, Prime Video has not announced a release date for the series.
