I have a graveyard of discarded devices in my office cabinet, all of which were intended to alleviate my shoulder aches but ultimately failed to deliver. However, I have finally found a solution that works for me: the combination of a roller ball mouse and Logitech’s MX Ergo. This mouse features a tilting design that allows for a more natural “handshake” grip, as well as a slow-motion option for precise movements in apps like Photoshop. The scroll wheel and trackball are both speedy and precise, and you can easily switch between two devices using the pairing button. Additionally, the various buttons can be programmed to perform app-specific actions using Logitech’s software. The MX Ergo is also compatible with iPads and makes a great Mac accessory.

One drawback is the outdated micro-USB charging port, but the battery life is long enough that I only need to charge it every few months. At $100, it may be out of budget for some, in which case the $70 Ergo Lift may be a more affordable alternative. The Ergo Lift offers a similar handshake grip, minus the roller ball, and can connect via Bluetooth or USB dongle.

Alternatively, Apple’s own Magic Trackpad is another option, which replicates the MacBook’s touch surface and can be placed anywhere. If you’re a fan of multi-touch gestures on your MacBook, the Magic Trackpad could be a more comfortable way to use them. — A.S.
