A manager of an Axis Bank branch in Sirsa, along with an accomplice, was taken into custody on Thursday in connection with a Rs 31 lakh cyber fraud case registered in January 2025.
According to Cybercrime ACP Priyanshu Diwan, Tarun Bansal, the manager of Axis Bank’s Kalanwali branch in Sirsa, and his associate Harvinder, an unemployed youth from Kalanwali, were apprehended from Sirsa and remanded to judicial custody on Friday.
A complaint was filed by a victim on December 20 last year, alleging that they were duped of Rs 31 lakh by fraudsters promising impressive returns on investment in crypto trading.
“The accused convinced me to transfer funds to various bank accounts, guaranteeing to invest the amount in crypto trading. Although the virtual account provided by the fraudsters showed profit, I was unable to withdraw the amount, and they ceased all communication with me,” the victim claimed.
Based on the complaint, a case was registered under section 318 (4) (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the BNS after a preliminary investigation in the third week of January 2025.
During the investigation, police focused on Harvinder, as Rs 7 lakh from the defrauded amount was transferred into his Axis Bank account. “Harvinder admitted to providing cyber fraudsters with access to his bank account through bank manager Tarun Bansal. Following his statement, we arrested Tarun Bansal, who had been working as a manager at Axis Bank for two and a half years,” the ACP stated. While Harvinder received a 2.5 percent share of the amount transferred out of his bank account, Tarun Bansal charged a 5 percent commission. Police recovered a chequebook of the account from the accused’s possession. The accused were sent to judicial remand on Friday.
