Following the release of the new Predator: Badlands trailer by Fox earlier this week, a Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con seemed like it might be redundant. The trailer had already showcased incredible action, massive creatures, cutting-edge technology, and Elle Fanning as an android in a unique role. However, it appears that there was still more to reveal, as Badlands director Dan Trachtenberg, along with Fanning and other cast members, presented fans with an additional 15 minutes of footage from the upcoming film, set to release on November 7.

The group shared a rough, unfinished version of the film’s opening, which proved to be more emotionally resonant than expected. This new insight suggests that Predator: Badlands has the potential to be one of the best films in the Predator franchise, rivaling Trachtenberg’s previous live-action film, Prey.

Without giving away too many details, the opening scene introduces the lead Predator, Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), as he navigates a desolate planet and utilizes his advanced technology to climb a cliff. Upon reaching the top, he encounters his brother in a massive cave, leading to an intense battle. This confrontation is meant to prove Dek’s worth as a Predator, but he ultimately emerges defeated.

In an effort to redeem himself, Dek’s brother suggests that he select a formidable prey from across the universe and bring it back to their home planet. Dek chooses a notoriously dangerous and feared creature, one that even their father is wary of. Dek is resolute in his decision, acknowledging that failure will result in his death.

Their father arrives on the scene, and Dek eagerly shares his plan. However, the father is dismissive and lacks confidence in his son’s abilities, having previously instructed the brother to kill Dek. Just as the brother is about to carry out the father’s orders, he instead frees Dek and confines him to their spaceship. The father then murders the brother for disobeying him and launches Dek into space, potentially sentencing him to death.

Notably, this entire sequence is subtitled in Yautja, the native language of the Predators.

The question remains as to whether Predator: Badlands holds more surprises in store. Will there be further connections to the Alien franchise? And how will this film fare against Edgar Wright’s The Running Man, with which it shares a release date of November 7? These answers will be revealed in due time.
