Public semiconductor company Arm will commence producing its own semiconductors this year, following the acquisition of a high-profile enterprise customer.

Arm, primarily owned by SoftBank, is now poised to manufacture its own chips, courtesy of Meta’s recent partnership, according to a report by the Financial Times. The chip in question is anticipated to be a central processing unit (CPU) designed for large data centers and can be tailored to meet the specific requirements of various customers. Arm will outsource the production of these chips.

The first in-house Arm-designed chip is expected to be unveiled as early as this summer, based on information shared by the Financial Times.

This marked shift in strategy for the semiconductor company, which has traditionally licensed its chip blueprints to companies such as Apple and Nvidia. By producing its own chips, Arm will inevitably turn some of its existing customers into competitors.
