The role of emerging news providers, such as journalists on social media and digital news startups, is becoming increasingly important in keeping people informed about news that matters to them. These providers often cover topics and communities that are underreported, frequently referred to as ‘news gaps’, and cater to local or language-based audiences.

However, with the influx of new entrants in the news ecosystem, it can be challenging to identify those who are producing reliable and helpful information. Our goal is to collaborate with the news ecosystem to provide guidance and support to this growing sector, ensuring that we engage with and support them effectively.

In partnership with multiple organizations, we are introducing the Global News Gaps Project, an initiative aimed at addressing this challenge through the following efforts:

  • We are supporting the launch of the News Creators Project, led by FT Strategies and backed by WAN-IFRA as the primary industry association partner. This project seeks to deepen our understanding of news voices that primarily operate on social media and video platforms.
  • We are expanding Project Oasis, a global initiative that profiles over 5,000 digital news organizations and 1,000 news creators, providing valuable insights into the news ecosystem.
  • We will be offering support to 300 emerging news providers, including training on Google products and strategic consultations to foster long-term growth. Additionally, 150 of these providers will receive membership to WAN-IFRA and funding to build their capacity.

Emerging news providers can submit their applications for the Global News Gaps Project here.
