Bluesky Verification Program Updates

Bluesky is expanding its verification program, despite still lacking clarity on the criteria for determining which accounts are "authentic and notable" enough to receive a blue checkmark. One month after announcing the introduction of checkmarks for select accounts, the company is now allowing users to apply for verification.

Application Process

The application process currently involves a multi-page form that requests users to provide details about their account and reasons for seeking verification. However, the criteria Bluesky will use to review applications and the process for evaluating them remain unclear. The company will only verify accounts that are "active and secure, authentic, and notable." It also recommends completing a bio and enabling two-factor authentication.

Eligibility and Verification Criteria

The application form asks users to categorize themselves, such as elected officials, brands, athletes, journalists, academics, or others. Bluesky notes that meeting the basic criteria does not guarantee verification and that its criteria for verification are evolving based on user feedback. The company plans to expand the scope of eligible accounts over time.

Challenges Ahead

As Bluesky finalizes its verification requirements, the process may become complicated due to the potential volume of applications. With over 36 million sign-ups, even a small percentage of users requesting verification could overwhelm the company’s small team. Bluesky had initially resisted implementing an in-house verification system despite issues with impersonation on the platform.

Expansion of Third-Party Verification

In addition to its in-house verification system, Bluesky is expanding its program allowing third-party entities to verify users. These entities can vouch for users’ legitimacy, and verified users receive a differently shaped checkmark. Organizations can also sign up to verify users on behalf of others through the same application form.
