According to a report from Bloomberg released on Monday, Apple is contemplating the use of AI models developed by OpenAI and Anthropic to power an updated version of Siri, rather than relying solely on its in-house technology.

As reported by Bloomberg, Apple is still actively working on an internal project, known as “LLM Siri”, which utilizes the company’s own AI models. Nevertheless, the tech giant has allegedly approached OpenAI and Anthropic with a request to develop versions of their AI models that are compatible with Apple’s cloud infrastructure, with the intention of conducting testing.

Apple had initially planned to launch an AI-enabled version of Siri in 2025, but due to a range of technical challenges, the release has been postponed to 2026 or later. This setback may be indicative of a larger issue, as Apple has been struggling to keep pace with Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic in the AI landscape over the past few years, as noted in a previous report.

Currently, Siri has the capability to draw upon ChatGPT for complex queries. However, it appears that Apple is now exploring the possibility of a more comprehensive integration with AI technology provided by third-party vendors, marking a significant shift in the company’s approach to AI development.
