The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency has introduced a new mobile application, called CBP Home, designed to facilitate the process for undocumented immigrants to notify the government of their intention to leave the United States. This app replaces the previous CBP One app, which allowed migrants to apply for asylum interviews at the U.S.-Mexico border but was taken offline shortly after President Trump took office.

The launch of CBP Home may seem ironic, but it underscores the significant difference in approach between the current and previous administrations. The app’s primary purpose appears to be to encourage migrants to voluntarily depart and return to their countries of origin. Under an executive order signed by Trump, undocumented immigrants residing in the U.S. are required to register with the federal government. It is unlikely that migrants will utilize this app, as it may be perceived as a tool for intimidation, aiming to coerce them into leaving the country.

As a next step, CBP might consider developing an app for green card holders or students to report any expressions of dissent against Israel, facilitating the government’s efforts to identify and deport them more efficiently.

Despite the Trump administration’s strong rhetoric on increasing deportations, the actual numbers have fallen short of those during the Biden administration. This is largely due to the limited resources available to track down and deport the estimated 11 million undocumented migrants in the country. However, Trump has been exploring alternative strategies, such as producing and sharing high-quality videos on social media depicting migrant deportations on military aircraft. Furthermore, he is reportedly considering revoking visas for Ukrainians who have fled their war-torn country.
