Google I/O 2025: What to Expect
Google I/O, the search giant’s annual developer conference, is set to kick off on Tuesday, May 20. This event is arguably the most important on the company’s annual calendar, offering a glimpse at everything Google has been working on over the past year and highlighting its biggest priorities for the next twelve months.

A Packed Schedule
The schedule for Google I/O was so packed that the company decided to spin off a dedicated Android showcase a whole week earlier. With that event now behind us, Google can focus on its core competency: AI. The company’s presentation will follow announcements from big rivals, including Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Meta, who have all made recent announcements related to AI.

Android 16
The Android Show featured Android Ecosystem President Sameer Samat, who showcased the new Material 3 Expressive design. We learned about features like the "Ongoing notifications" bar and the expansion of Gemini to Wear OS 6, Android Auto, and Google TV. Android is also improving its scam-detection features and refining its Find Hub to support satellite connectivity later in the year. Google has confirmed that Android 16 will arrive before the second half of the year, with a stable build coming to Pixel devices next month.

Android XR
Google is preparing to release Android XR, a new platform that utilizes the power of its Gemini AI models. The company is working with Samsung on a headset codenamed Project Moohan, which could arrive this year. We expect to learn more about Android XR and its ecosystem partners at I/O.

AI and More AI
Google is likely to make more AI-related announcements at I/O than ever before. Features like AI Overviews and AI Mode may receive updates, and the company may have something to say about Project Mariner, a web-surfing agent demoed at I/O 2024. As an AI company, Google will prioritize AI at I/O, and we can expect significant announcements.

Project Astra
Project Astra, a voice assistant with advanced image recognition features, was one of the impressive demos at I/O 2024. Although the tech needs more work, we may see an update on Project Astra at I/O 2025.

Pinterest Competitor
According to a report, Google might unveil its own take on Pinterest at I/O. The feature will show image results based on user queries, and users can save pictures in different folders. Whether this is a standalone product or built into Search is unclear.

Wear OS
Wear OS 6 is coming, with Material 3 Expressive gracing its interface. We may learn more about Wear OS at I/O, although it’s unclear how much attention it will receive.

NotebookLM
Google has launched a standalone NotebookLM app, a machine-learning note-taking app that can summarize documents and synthesize podcast summaries.
