With the highly anticipated return of Andor to Disney+ on April 22, fans are eagerly awaiting the second season, which promises to further establish the foundation of the Rebellion as depicted in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
In a recent discussion with Empire, lead actor Diego Luna and showrunner Tony Gilroy revealed that the upcoming season will provide answers to many questions surrounding the characters. Gilroy stated, “What happens to their love affairs? Their relationships? Their homes? Their children? What happens to everything around them, if you’re thrust into this vice-grip of revolution? Those are the big tectonic moves of the second season.”
While Cassian Andor, played by Luna, remains the central focus, season two will also delve into the character of Luthen Rael, the organizer of the revolution, portrayed by Stellan Skarsgård. Gilroy noted, “Now, all of a sudden, he’s going public,” which raises questions about Luthen’s fate, as he is absent from the events of Rogue One.
Gilroy further explained, “What do you do if your currency is privacy and secrecy, and failure is death? How do you scale up? How do you play with others? How do all the disparate pieces of the Rebellion come together in [Rebel base] Yavin?”
A part of the audience may hope that Luthen’s character survives and continues to play a role in the Rebellion, but the reality of revolutions often dictates otherwise, as the idea becomes the driving force behind the actions of those who join the cause.
Luna pointed out that the events of Andor season two will have a direct impact on the narrative of Rogue One, stating, “You’re gonna hear some lines [on a rewatch] and go [gasp],” highlighting the consequences of the characters’ actions. “Before, you just passed over them. Not anymore.”
We have already explored some theories about the potential connections between the two stories, including the possibility that Luthen may have Cassian involved in some questionable activities during the outbreak of the Ghorman Massacre, which could serve as a catalyst for the Rebellion.
The new season may also shed new light on other aspects of Rogue One, such as the characters of Krennic and the Death Star, as well as Saw’s journey to Jedha. Andor season two has the potential to recontextualize various elements of the prequel that inspired it.
