AMD Accelerates Data Center GPU Launch
Early Sampling and Production Ramp-Up
AMD has announced that it plans to launch its next major data center GPUs, the AMD Instinct MI350 series, sooner than initially anticipated. During the company’s Q4 2024 earnings call on Tuesday, AMD CEO Lisa Su stated that the company will sample the MI350 with "lead customers" this quarter and accelerate production shipments to "mid-year."
Revised Launch Timeline
Su explained that AMD had previously expected to launch the MI350 in the second half of 2025. However, due to strong customer demand, the company has decided to bring forward the production ramp to the middle of the year. This move is expected to improve AMD’s relative competitiveness in the market.
Data Center Revenue Growth
AMD’s data center revenue has been growing steadily, with sales of AMD Instinct chips reaching over $5 billion in 2024. The company expects its data center segment to grow "double digits" in 2025. In 2024, data center revenue accounted for around half of AMD’s overall revenue, which was $7.1 billion.
AI Compute Demand and Future Growth
Su expressed confidence in the demand for AI compute, stating that the company sees the data center business growing to tens of billions of dollars over the next couple of years. This growth is expected to be driven by the increasing adoption of AI and machine learning technologies in various industries.
