New Kindle Feature: Recaps
Amazon has introduced a new feature that makes it easier to get into the latest release in a series, especially if it’s been a while since you’ve read the previous books. The new Recaps feature is part of the latest software update for the Kindle. According to Amazon, this feature is similar to “Previously on…” segments found in TV shows. The company announced Recaps in a blog post, stating that users can access it once they receive the software update over the air or after downloading and installing it from Amazon’s website.
Although Amazon didn’t discuss the technology behind the feature in its post, a spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the recaps will be AI-generated. Shortly after the feature was released, users took to social media to discuss the feature, questioning whether Amazon is using generative AI to write series summaries. They expressed concerns about the potential for the technology to include plot elements that aren’t actually in the books. An Amazon spokesperson, Ale Iraheta, assured TechCrunch that Amazon’s recaps are accurate, stating, “We use technology, including GenAI and Amazon moderators, to create short recaps of books that accurately reflect book content.” However, Iraheta advised users to use the feature at their own risk.
Currently, the Recaps feature is available for best-selling English-language book series on all Kindle devices in the US. To see if your favorite series has a recap, look for the “View Recaps” button within the series page in your Kindle library. The feature will soon be available for the Kindle app on iOS as well.
