A report claiming that Amazon would display the tariff-related costs of its products has been denied by the company. This report had suggested that Amazon would show the portion of a product’s price that is attributed to the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on imports, particularly those from China, next to the item’s total price. However, Amazon has stated that this is not the case. According to tariffs imposed on imports, the company considered but never approved the idea.

Tim Doyle, an Amazon spokesperson, told Engadget that “the team that runs our ultra-low-cost Amazon Haul store considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products. This was never approved and is not going to happen.” This clarification comes after Punchbowl News reported the alleged plan.

During a White House press briefing on Tuesday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to the report, calling it “a hostile and political act by Amazon.” Leavitt also referenced a report from 2021 that claimed Amazon had partnered with “a Chinese propaganda arm.”

Amazon Haul is the company’s discount storefront, which was launched to compete with low-cost Chinese retailers like Temu and Shein. Recently, Temu started including “import charges” of around 145 percent on various products, which matches the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on many imports from China. Shein also increased its prices, although it hasn’t directly attributed the increases to “import charges,” according to CNBC. A banner on Temu’s website informs customers that “tariffs are included in the price you pay” and that they will “never have to pay extra at delivery.”

Amazon announced on Tuesday that it will hold its annual Prime Day sale in July. However, Reuters reports that some third-party sellers plan to opt out of the event due to uncertainty surrounding tariffs.

Update April 29, 2025, 11:36AM ET: Amazon has provided an updated statement.
