Alibaba has announced that it is providing free access to its advanced artificial intelligence models, which have the capability to generate highly realistic videos and images from both text and image inputs. The company has made four variants of its Wan 2.1 series, the latest iteration of its AI technology, open source and available for download and modification by users. These models can be accessed through Alibaba Cloud’s ModelScope and Hugging Face platforms, which offer a range of open-source AI models to researchers, academics, and commercial entities. According to Reuters, the open-sourced models are designated as T2V-1.3B, T2V-14B, I2V-14B-720P, and I2V-14B-480P, with the “14B” indicating that the model can process 14 billion parameters.
Last month, the Chinese company DeepSeek made its R1 reasoning model available for free download and use, sparking a surge in demand for open-source AI technologies. DeepSeek has further expanded its commitment to the open-source community by releasing five code repositories behind its service.
Alibaba was among the companies that joined the fray in developing generative AI technology after the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT two years ago. Recently, Alibaba Group’s Chairman, Joe Tsai, stated that the company’s generative AI technology will power artificial intelligence features for iPhones sold in the Chinese market. Due to strict regulations surrounding AI products in China, Apple is unable to use the same AI technology for phones released in the country and must instead partner with local companies, including Alibaba.
