Amazon has fulfilled its commitment to introduce an enhanced Alexa experience, known as Alexa+, by the end of March. However, the service allegedly falls short of incorporating several features that Amazon showcased at a press conference in late February.
According to The Washington Post, Alexa+ currently lacks the ability to perform certain “agentic” AI tasks that were highlighted in the company’s marketing campaign, such as ordering food on Grubhub or generating stories to entertain children. Additionally, the assistant is unable to visually identify individuals and remind them to complete specific tasks, or suggest gift ideas – two capabilities that were demonstrated during the press event.
Furthermore, some features are being rolled out to only a limited number of users initially, including the ability to book an Uber and receive cooking suggestions. Meanwhile, a web application that Amazon announced for Alexa+ last month does not have a specific release timeline.
It is reported that Alexa+ has been experiencing issues from its inception, largely due to challenges with the underlying AI infrastructure. Based on The Washington Post’s reporting, it appears that Amazon still faces significant challenges in this regard.
