Samsung Electronics is paving the way for significant advancements in its foundry business, with a substantial focus on expanding its 4nm process technology, which is now entering its 4th generation, and has already commenced mass production, according to reports.
The company initially introduced its 4nm process mechanism in 2021, and its 4th generation 4nm process technology, designed for high-performance computing, is tailored to support AI functionalities and other critical applications, as Samsung continues to evolve its technology.
The Foundry Division of Samsung Electronics, dubbed SF4X, announced that mass production of this latest 4th-gen technology began in November 2024, as the company strives to expand its foundry business, with SF4X poised to play a crucial role, particularly given the high demand for AI-based semiconductor manufacturers.
The newest SF4X 4nm process mechanism features a full wiring process called BOEL (Back End of the Line) and incorporates high-speed transistors, which enhance performance compared to previous generations, marking a significant improvement.
Although Samsung is dedicated to strengthening its chip business, the company has faced challenges in the semiconductor sector, failing to capitalize on opportunities with major customers, such as Qualcomm, in the advanced foundry market; however, the latest SF4X, based on 4nm process technology, may prove beneficial to the foundry division.
