Our beloved kleptomaniac prince has made a comeback. A new installment in the Katamari Damacy series, Katamari Damacy Rolling Live, is being developed by the series’ caretaker, Bandai Namco. As the title suggests, the game brings the familiar rolling mechanics to iOS devices, Mac computers, and Apple TV.
The Apple Arcade exclusive doesn’t appear to deviate significantly from its predecessors. Players control the prince as he rolls up objects until they grow large enough to become stars. The core gameplay remains the same, but the plot has undergone a change. In previous games, the prince’s actions were driven by the noble goal of rebuilding the galaxy. This time, however, the stars are created to boost the king’s career as a livestreamer.
Successful runs in the game increase the king’s “subscriber count,” leading to positive comments from in-game fans. Once the viewership reaches a certain threshold, new stages are unlocked. Although this twist may seem unusual, it’s not as if fans play Katamari for the plot; they play for the satisfaction of rolling up objects to grow larger.
Apple promises a “captivating soundtrack that blends different genres.” While it will be challenging to surpass the original soundtrack, which is one of the all-time greats, we will have to wait and see. It has been approximately eight years since the last new Katamari game and around a decade since a good one was released. Bandai Namco did release a remaster of the original title back in 2018 and the sequel in 2023.
This isn’t the only Apple Arcade news today. The platform announced an update to the well-received Skate City: New York that adds 30 new levels and 90 new objectives, available on March 27. Additionally, a new Space Invaders game is set to launch on April 3.
