Introduction to GSA’s New Chatbot

Employees of the General Services Administration (GSA), the agency responsible for managing government real estate and specific IT initiatives, have been introduced to a customized chatbot provided by Elon Musk’s organization. According to a recent report, this chatbot is designed to automate various tasks. An internal memorandum instructs workers that they can utilize the chatbot to "draft emails, create talking points, summarize text, and write code."

Features and Capabilities of GSAi

The chatbot, named GSAi, offers users three different models to choose from: Claude Haiku 3.5 (set as the default), Claude Sonnet 3.5 v2, and Meta Llama 3.2. The primary purpose of GSAi is to "analyze contract and procurement data," as reported by Wired. This functionality is expected to enhance the efficiency of tasks within the GSA.

Context and Deployment

The GSA is among the agencies affected by recent restructuring, resulting in the departure of over 1,000 employees, as disclosed by sources to a news outlet. This includes approximately 90 individuals from the technology division, as mentioned in a Wired report. Internal communications regarding the chatbot, accessed by Wired, caution employees against inputting sensitive information such as "federal nonpublic information," personally identifiable information, or "controlled unclassified information" into the system. Following a pilot test with a smaller user group last month, GSAi has been made available to about 1,500 workers, with plans for further expansion in the future.
