Introduction to the Volvo ES90

Volvo has officially launched the ES90, the fully electrified version of its S60 sedan. The vehicle’s design combines the adaptability of a fastback with the spacious interior and higher ground clearance of an SUV. Notably, it is the first Volvo EV to feature an 800-volt system, which promises faster charging times. By utilizing lighter components, the 800-volt technology not only reduces the vehicle’s overall weight but also potentially leads to a longer range and better acceleration.

Performance and Charging Capabilities

For the ES90, Volvo promises a driving range of 700 kilometers or 435 miles, although the official EPA range may be slightly shorter. When plugged into a 350 kW fast charger, the model can add 300 kilometers (186 miles) of range in just 10 minutes. Moreover, its 106 kWh battery can go from 10 to 80 percent full in just 20 minutes. All variants of the vehicle have a top speed of 112 mph, but the Twin Motor Performance (all-wheel drive) version boasts the fastest acceleration, going from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds.

Technology and Design

The ES90 is built on the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack, similar to the EX90 SUV. This unified hardware and software base will serve as the foundation for all of Volvo’s electric vehicles, facilitating simultaneous over-the-air updates for all EVs as needed. The ES90 is distinguished as the first Volvo model to be powered by a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration, making it the most powerful car in terms of core computing capacity, according to Volvo’s chief engineering and technology officer.

Features and Availability

The ES90 features a slightly raised ride height and incorporates Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer headlight design, along with new C-shaped LED rear lamps. It is equipped with an array of sensors, including one lidar, five radars, seven cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors, which enable its active safety systems to help drivers avoid collisions and hazards. The vehicle’s interior is versatile, with the option to individually fold down its three rear seats for more space. Additionally, the panoramic roof offers 99.9 percent UV protection, and buyers have the option to choose an electrochromic version that can darken the glass at the touch of a button to reduce glare. The infotainment system is accessible on a 14.5-inch center screen display, which comes with built-in Google apps, including Maps and Assistant.

Ordering and Release

Interested buyers can currently order the ES90 in various countries, including Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Volvo plans to release the ES90 in additional markets later this year and into 2026.
