Shure has introduced the MoveMic 88+, a wireless direct-to-phone microphone that features four selectable polar patterns, a first for its kind. This feature is important because polar patterns determine the direction from which a microphone picks up sound. Most microphones in this category offer either an omnidirectional polar pattern, which records sound equally from all sides, or a cardioid pattern, which picks up audio from a single direction.

The MoveMic 88+ offers both omnidirectional and cardioid patterns, as well as bi-directional and raw mid-side patterns. This increased versatility makes the microphone suitable for various applications. For example, the cardioid pattern is ideal for recording TikTok videos or acoustic performances, while the bi-directional pattern is better suited for two-person interviews. The omnidirectional pattern is perfect for field recordings.

Mounting Options and Connectivity

The microphone offers various mounting options, including attachment to most popular tripods and mic stands using included mic clips, and can also be used as a handheld microphone. It pairs directly with a mobile phone via Shure’s MOTIV app, eliminating the need for the company’s MoveMic Receiver. However, it can integrate with the receiver if needed, allowing use with a regular camera or computer.

Audio Controls and Specifications

The MOTIV app provides users with control over the audio signal, including settings like gain, EQ, and high pass filter. The wireless range of the MoveMic 88+ is up to 100 feet, and the battery lasts approximately eight hours per charge. The microphone is available now for $299 and comes with a cold shoe mic clip, 5/8” mic clip, and USB-C charging cable.
