Google Gemini has introduced an update, first reported by 9to5Google on Monday, which enables users to access the AI chatbot directly from their iPhone’s lock screen. By adding a Gemini widget to their lock screen, users can now utilize Gemini Live, Google’s relatively real-time voice feature for its AI chatbot, even before unlocking their phone.

Given that Apple’s revamped AI-powered Siri is reportedly facing delays until 2027, as noted in this report, other companies in the AI sector are capitalizing on the opportunity to provide iPhone users with their own AI assistants. Although these features offer iPhone users a glimpse into the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) and voice assistants, Apple’s eventual version of an LLM-powered Siri is likely to be more deeply integrated with the iPhone’s other functions upon its release.

Similarly, the ChatGPT iOS app allows users to access OpenAI’s near real-time voice feature, known as Advanced Voice Mode, directly from the lock screen.

In addition to Gemini Live, the updated Gemini app includes several other lock screen widgets. These include a widget for capturing and uploading photos using the iPhone’s camera, a widget for setting reminders and calendar events, and another that enables users to initiate a text chat with Gemini directly from the lock screen.

Google announced on Monday that later in March, it will introduce the ability for Gemini users on Android to ask the AI chatbot questions about video and on-screen content, receiving real-time answers. Initially unveiled as part of Project Astra, Google DeepMind’s multimodal AI project, these features will be available to subscribers of Google’s $20-a-month Gemini Advanced plan. Users can expect to see these features integrated into the Gemini app in the coming weeks.
