I’ve finally had the chance to dive into some titles from DSTLRY, a relatively new publisher of creator-owned comics, and I started with the series Warm Fusion, and I must say, it’s off to a fantastic start.
Warm Fusion is billed as “a dark, sci-fi thriller that combines the body horror of David Cronenberg with the bleak urban future of Blade Runner.” The story unfolds in a dystopian New York City where relentless rain and birth defects have become the norm due to a catastrophic medical disaster caused by a pharmaceutical company. The narrative follows detective Jarrod Hannover and escort Vin Young, also known as Snow White, as they investigate a wave of brutal and bizarre murders targeting sex workers. Meanwhile, the enigmatic scientist Nicholas Fleischer is introduced, working on an experimental treatment called Warm Fusion that seems to stimulate the growth of new limbs in place of missing ones.
This series boasts an impressive array of strengths, from its spot-on cyberpunk atmosphere to a gripping script that draws you in from the start. The first two issues are packed with intense moments, and the pacing masterfully balances mystery and plot progression. Additionally, Vin’s character is undeniably cool, and I’ve grown quite fond of her. Issue # 2 has just been released, with the next installment slated for mid-April. The creative team behind Warm Fusion includes writer Scott Hoffman, artist Alberto Ponticelli, colorist Lee Loughridge, and letterer Steve Wands.
