Square Enix has unveiled a new sub-brand called Dragon Quest Golf, which is precisely what the name implies. This new team is dedicated to creating golf-themed merchandise and accessories based on the long-standing JRPG franchise. As anticipated, one of the brand’s initial offerings is a golf ball inspired by the iconic blue Slime, typically the first enemy encountered in a DQ game.

The company plans to showcase additional merchandise at the 59th Japan Golf Fair on March 7, although Square Enix has not yet revealed any other products beyond the aforementioned ball. It’s possible that we might see a golf bag inspired by a Weartiger or tees designed to resemble an Eggsoskeleton, or perhaps a powerful driver named after a Golem. While the possibilities are endless, it’s likely that the company will unveil a range of golf shirts and khakis featuring DQ branding.

So, why is Square Enix venturing into this new territory? According to the company, it’s all about shifting demographics, according to a translation by Siliconera. The franchise has been incredibly popular in Japan since its introduction in 1986, nearly 40 years ago, and fans who started with the first game may now be grandparents. Additionally, Japan has a strong affection for golf.

Interestingly, this isn’t even the most unusual gaming-related merchandise we’ve come across this week. Honda has just announced a truly bizarre “near life-size recreation of the Legendary Pokémon Koraidon,” which is powered by the company’s self-balancing technology, allowing it to walk on all four legs. Similar to the Dragon Quest Golf merchandise, this exhibit will be on display on March 7.
