Meta has introduced the latest version of its Project Aria augmented reality glasses for research purposes, dubbed Aria Gen 2.

Aria Gen 2, launched approximately five years after the initial Aria device, brings enhanced features to the platform. These include an upgraded sensor suite and Meta’s custom-designed silicon. The new device is equipped with a PPG sensor to measure heart rate and a contact microphone to differentiate the wearer’s voice from background noise.

According to Meta, the 75-gram Aria Gen 2 device, capable of performing AI-driven tasks such as eye tracking, hand tracking, and speech recognition, features open-ear “force-canceling” speakers and a battery that provides up to eight hours of use on a single charge.

In the coming months, Meta plans to distribute the glasses to academic and commercial research institutions. One of the early adopters, Envision, is utilizing Aria Gen 2 to develop solutions for individuals who are blind or have low vision, as outlined in a recent blog post.
