Widespread Adoption of AI Among Undergraduate Students

It appears that nearly all undergraduate students are now utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) in some capacity. A recent report published by the UK’s Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) reveals that a staggering 92 percent of students have employed generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, to aid their studies. Furthermore, 88 percent of these students have used AI for exam purposes. These numbers represent a significant increase from HEPI’s February 2024 report, which found that 66 percent and 53 percent of participants reported using AI, respectively.

The primary reasons cited by students for using AI include time savings, enhanced work quality, and instant support. Interestingly, wealthier, STEM-focused, and male respondents expressed greater enthusiasm for AI in the survey. On the other hand, students’ main concerns about AI usage included accusations of cheating, receiving fake results or hallucinations, and obtaining biased results. Female and younger students were more likely to voice these concerns. The survey, conducted by HEPI in December 2024, collected data from 1,041 British and international students in the UK.

Notably, universities received high marks from students regarding the integrity of their AI policies. Four-fifths of respondents indicated that their institution had a clear AI policy, and a significant 76 percent believed that their university would be able to detect AI use in assessed work (despite the fact that 88 percent of students admitted to using AI). Additionally, staff members are becoming better equipped to assist with AI, with 42 percent of students reporting that their staff is “well-equipped,” a significant increase from 18 percent last year.
