Framework’s Modular Laptop Gets a Boost with AMD’s Ryzen AI 300

It’s unconventional to discuss Framework “launching” a new laptop, given that the company continuously produces the same machine with modular, upgradeable, and repairable components, reducing unnecessary e-waste. Let’s acknowledge that while “launching” might not be the most accurate term, it’s how we’ll describe the introduction of the updated AMD edition of the Framework 13, which now features the Ryzen AI 300 processor.

The significant update is the incorporation of the advanced AMD unit, which significantly enhances AI performance for Microsoft Copilot+. Framework has also made several refinements, including the addition of Wi-Fi 7, a new thermal system, an improved keyboard, and new color options. As is customary, these features can be added to any existing Framework 13 as needed.

One of the major issues with previous Framework 13 models has been cooling, with the small fans working overtime when the system is under heavy load. The new mainboard addresses this issue with a revised cooling system, featuring a single 10mm heat pipe paired with Honeywell’s PTM7958 thermal paste, aiming to reduce noise and improve overall performance.

Recall that the previous AMD Framework 13 had issues with port standards. The situation is now clearer, with the rear ports supporting USB 4 and the front ports supporting USB 3.2 and DisplayPort. Although this was explored in greater detail earlier, the arrangement remains somewhat inconvenient if you forget which port supports which standard.

Framework has also made subtle adjustments to the keyboard to address rigidity issues with wide keys, such as the shift and spacebar. Windows 11 models will feature a Copilot key, but Framework notes that a DIY edition without this key is also available for purchase.

The updates also include the introduction of injection-molded packaging, allowing Framework to offer transparent hardware. The company will now sell transparent bezels, as well as translucent purple, green, and black options for greater customization. Additionally, many expansion cards will be available in transparent plastic, enabling users to personalize their laptops further.

The new Framework Laptop 13 with AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 series starts at $800 for the DIY edition and $1,099 for pre-built models. Prices will vary depending on the chosen configuration. Pre-orders are now open, with shipments scheduled to begin in April. Framework will also offer the older Ryzen 7040 model for $749, which CEO Nirav Patel states is a permanent price reduction to make the laptop more accessible to new buyers.
