The cryptocurrency sector has primarily relied on its capacity to “tokenize” various assets, which is essentially a sophisticated rebranding of the term “monetize”. The NFT market, for instance, successfully transformed digital receipts for web files into a temporary industry worth hundreds of billions of dollars. The potential for generating wealth is limitless when people are willing to invest in such ventures. Now, a new crypto platform, Time.fun, claims to be monetizing our experience of time itself.

According to a report by The Block, Time.fun is a “tokenized time platform”. At its core, the concept is relatively simple. By visiting the platform’s website, users can browse and search for “creators” and influencers, and pay them for a specified period of interaction. The site’s motto, “Time Is Money”, reflects this idea.

In essence, Time.fun operates similarly to platforms like Cameo, OnlyFans, or Fiverr, with the added element of cryptocurrency. Content creators can set their own rates for their services, which can include access to influencers, musicians, visual artists, and technical expertise, such as feedback on UX and website design. The platform allows users to interact with creators through direct messages, group chats, and voice or video calls.

Time.fun’s founder, Kawz, explained to The Block, “I think tokenized time is the best way to ‘long someone’, regardless of their project. If they’re early in their career, you can buy their time, and if they become successful, the value of their time will naturally increase as more people seek their advice.” Kawz’s vision is to create a new asset class where people can own, trade, and utilize other people’s time across various products and services.

Kawz further stated, “Time.fun is just the first platform, and we need to make it successful before exploring other use cases. The long-term goal is to establish a new asset class, enabling people to own and trade time, and use it to access various products and services.” Like other crypto platforms, Time.fun is essentially rebranding existing services and systems of exchange, integrating them into the unregulated economic space of DeFi. Since all labor requires time, it can be argued that all labor involves monetized time, making Time.fun another gig-services directory site that accepts cryptocurrency payments.
