Introduction to Sigma’s Latest Camera
Sigma has recently unveiled the BF, a novel 24.6-megapixel full-frame, mirrorless camera that deviates from the norm by incorporating a built-in SSD instead of relying on CFexpress or SD card slots. Known for its expertise in lens manufacturing and production of unconventional cameras, Sigma’s BF embodies this legacy through its unique design and storage approach.
Design and Features of the Sigma BF
The Sigma BF is crafted from a single block of aluminum, boasting flat, angular edges that may not be the most ergonomically designed for comfort in human hands, though it does feature a thumb rest on the rear. This minimalist aesthetic extends to the absence of text on the camera body and the employment of haptic buttons. The back of the camera is equipped with a high-resolution display, a pill-shaped status monitor for settings, a navigation dial, an option button, a power button, and a playback button. The top of the BF is even more minimalist, featuring only two microphones and a shutter button.
Video and Photography Capabilities
The BF supports L-mount lenses and is capable of capturing 6K video with its 35mm full-frame sensor. It also features HEVC encoding and can record video at up to 120 frames per second. The built-in 230GB SSD provides ample storage, allowing for over 14,000 JPEG files, 4,300 uncompressed RAW images, or 2.5 hours of video at the highest quality setting, according to Sigma. Furthermore, the BF comes with several color modes that can alter the look of photographs, including standard, rich, and color-specific settings like powder blue, forest green, and sunset red.
Specifications and Availability
The Sigma BF’s unique design and features make it an intriguing option for those interested in a camera that stands out from the crowd. However, this uniqueness comes at a price. As reported by PetaPixel, the Sigma BF will be available for purchase, body-only, at a cost of $1,999 starting in April 2025, with color options including black and silver. Despite the steep price tag, the BF’s capabilities and design philosophy may make it an appealing choice for certain photographers and videographers looking for something distinct.
