Reflections on a Major Achievement
A couple of reflections on the recent quantum computing breakthrough we announced are worth sharing.
We were all taught that there are three primary types of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. However, this has now changed.
After nearly 20 years of pursuit, we have successfully created a new state of matter, facilitated by a new class of materials known as topoconductors, which enable a significant leap in computing capabilities.
This innovation powers Majorana 1, the first quantum processing unit built on a topological core.
We believe this breakthrough will enable us to develop a genuinely meaningful quantum computer in years, rather than decades as previously predicted.
The qubits created using topoconductors are faster, more reliable, and smaller, measuring 1/100th of a millimeter. This breakthrough provides a clear path to developing a million-qubit processor.
Imagine a chip small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, yet capable of solving problems that even all the computers on Earth combined cannot.
Sometimes, researchers must work on projects for decades to achieve progress.
It requires patience and persistence to have a significant impact on the world.
And I am grateful that we have the opportunity to do just that at Microsoft.
