Six months have passed since we launched our first Pixel phones with Gemini integrated. Since then, our team has been working diligently to update Gemini models, enhance the Gemini app, and develop innovative features to make it more useful. Here are six significant upgrades that have been introduced over the past six months for Gemini:
1. New AI Models Enhanced Gemini’s Capabilities as a Smarter, Faster Assistant
In December, we introduced experimental versions of our latest family of models, Gemini 2.0. This family includes Flash, Flash Thinking, and Pro, each designed for specific use cases. Gemini 2.0 Flash handles everyday tasks, while 2.0 Flash Thinking is ideal for questions requiring multiple steps, and 2.0 Pro excels in coding, math, and complex queries. An updated version of 2.0 Flash was made available to all Gemini app users on both desktop and mobile in January. As a result, Gemini now responds to queries more quickly and effectively handles more complex questions.
Furthermore, the Gemini app now utilizes our latest Imagen 3 model, significantly improving image quality with brighter, better-composed images and more accurate rendering of diverse art styles, ranging from photorealism to anime.
2. Multimodal Capabilities Expanded Gemini Live’s Conversational Abilities
We introduced multimodal capabilities to Gemini Live in January, enhancing its conversational features. Gemini Live, available for both Android and iOS devices, enables free-flowing conversations with Gemini. With multimodal capabilities, users can add images, files, and YouTube videos to conversations, providing more context and facilitating tasks such as identifying plants or understanding cooking tutorials.
3. Gemini Initiated Research and Report Generation for Users
Launched in December, Deep Research is a new feature within Gemini Advanced that leverages Gemini models to search numerous websites, explore complex topics, and deliver findings in easy-to-read reports. Users can request Deep Research to compare mortgage rates or assist in car purchasing decisions. The reports include source links, and users can edit or add information via the chat feature. Recently, Deep Research was made available on mobile devices, including Pixel phones, in the Gemini app, in addition to its availability on desktop for all users.
4. Gemini Enhanced Its Responsiveness Across More Platforms
To improve assistance, Gemini now responds to more queries in various contexts. Notably, Gemini answers questions even when the phone is locked, enhancing its availability and usefulness.
5. Extensions Broadened Gemini’s Functionalities
Over the past six months, Gemini has expanded its capabilities through the integration of various extensions. For example, the Google Home extension enables control over smart devices, and Gemini can initiate calls, draft messages, and open apps like Google Calendar, Spotify, and more. The Utilities extension further allows Gemini to set alarms, adjust device settings, and open the camera for quick selfies, with the list of available extensions continuously growing.
6. Redesign and Simplified Interface for Easier Interaction
At the beginning of the year, the Gemini overlay on Pixel underwent a redesign, featuring a simple and intuitive layout that makes it easier for users to prompt Gemini whenever needed. Activation is now as straightforward as long-pressing the power button or saying “Hey Google”.
