The cult classic series Buffy the Vampire Slayer may soon be making a TV comeback with Sarah Michelle Gellar, but five years before the show premiered, a different version of Buffy’s story hit the big screen in 1992. Written by Joss Whedon, the film shares the same basic premise as the series, following a cheerful blonde named Buffy as she saves the world from monsters. However, it has its own unique flavor, serving as both a time capsule of 1990s teen culture and a surprisingly timeless story.

The movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer is not shy about its satirical elements, opening with a prologue set in “Europe: The Dark Ages” that establishes the mythology of the story. The film then cuts to “Southern California: The Lite Ages,” where we meet Buffy, played by Kristy Swanson, and her friends, who appear to be superficial and airheaded at first glance. However, as the story progresses, we see a more ruthless competitiveness lurking beneath the surface, particularly in their catty interactions with each other.

Buffy’s life takes a turn when she meets her watcher, Merrick, played by Donald Sutherland, who is tasked with helping her fulfill her destiny as a vampire slayer. Despite initial doubts, Merrick dedicates himself to aiding Buffy, and their relationship becomes a highlight of the film. Meanwhile, Buffy also meets Pike, played by Luke Perry, a burnout who challenges her initial judgment of him and helps her develop her self-actualization.

The film’s villain, Lothos, played by Rutger Hauer, and his underling, Amilyn, played by Paul Reubens, provide some of the movie’s most campy delights. While the plot has some holes and underbaked lore, the performances make up for it. The movie also features a number of notable cameos, including Hilary Swank, David Arquette, Thomas Jane, and Ben Affleck.

Despite being a product of the 1990s, Buffy the Vampire Slayer remains a timeless story with evergreen themes, including an unlikely hero, supernatural threats, and mismatched romance. The film’s humor, both in its zippy lines and physical comedy, still holds up today, with Reubens’ death scene being a standout moment.
