As of August 20 this year, Amazon’s app store for Android will cease operations. The company has informed developers that they will no longer be able to submit new apps to the store, as stated in a recent notice.

According to a support page, Amazon will also be discontinuing its digital currency, Amazon Coins, which was previously used for purchasing games and apps on the app store.

The company has announced on its support page that “Starting August 20, 2025, access to the Amazon Appstore on Android devices will no longer be available. Additionally, the Amazon Coins program will be discontinued on the same date, August 20, 2025.

Amazon has assured users that any remaining coins will be refunded as of August 20.

The app store will continue to function on Amazon’s own devices, including Fire TV and Fire Tablet, despite the discontinuation on Android.

At this time, the company has not provided a response to inquiries regarding the reasoning behind the app store’s discontinuation.

Since 2011, Amazon has been attempting to establish an alternative app store ecosystem, competing with Google. The company also utilized its app store to support the failed Fire Phone project.

In a similar move, Amazon announced last year that it would be discontinuing support for its app store on Windows, effective March 5, 2025, which had offered Android apps since 2021.
