Mark Zuckerberg’s charitable organization has abolished its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, just weeks after assurance was given to staff that support for DEI efforts would persist, as reported by The Guardian.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), co-founded by Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, will discontinue its internal DEI programs and cease providing “social advocacy funding,” which had supported grants for racial equity and immigration reform initiatives. According to a staff email obtained by The Guardian, Marc Malandro, the COO of CZI, stated that the organization will instead focus on issuing grants for “biology and AI” research.

Additionally, CZI has canceled its Science Diversity Leadership Awards, which had provided $1.5 million in funding to researchers, and terminated its Diverse Slate Practice, a policy requiring diverse applicant interviews for all open positions.

In an email to employees, Malandro wrote, “Given the changing regulatory and legal environment, we will no longer maintain a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility team at CZI.”

This decision represents a complete reversal of CZI’s previous stance. Following Meta’s announcement of the elimination of its DEI programs, some employees expressed concern and inquired whether CZI would remain committed to its values, as reported by The Guardian earlier in February. At the time, Mark Gundacker, who leads HR at CZI, assured employees that the changes at Meta would not impact CZI’s operations.

However, in the email announcing the changes, Malandro stated that the decision was made to help CZI “align with our focus as a science philanthropy.”

CZI did not respond to our request for comment on this matter.
