Google Play Books iOS App Now Allows Direct Purchases
Introduction
Google has been granted permission to sell e-books and audiobooks directly to customers through its iOS app, Google Play Books. Previously, iOS apps could only offer access to content purchased elsewhere, such as e-books bought via a website, unless developers obtained a specific exception to link users to their own website for purchases.
New Purchase Process
According to a post on Google’s blog, users of the Google Play Books iOS app will now see a new "Get book" button. When clicked, this button will direct users to the Google Play website to complete their e-book or audiobook purchase. The process allows users to access their recently opened book listings and complete a purchase using their Google Account and saved payment information.

By processing transactions on its own website, Google can avoid paying Apple a commission, typically 30%, on in-app purchases of digital content. This change benefits Google financially and may lead to more competitive pricing for customers.
Family Sharing
In addition to direct purchases, users of the iOS app can share their books with a family group from Google Play’s Family Library. This feature is available regardless of whether family members use iOS, Android, or the web as their reading or listening device.
Background
Google applied for the External Link Account Entitlement, a rule introduced as a result of Apple’s settlement with the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) in 2022. This rule applies to "reader apps" that primarily provide access to digital content, such as magazines, books, audio, music, or video.
Requirements and Implications
To use the entitlement, developers must request additional approval from Apple and follow specific rules, including:
- How the website displays when the external link is clicked
- How the link is formatted
- How it’s referenced in the app’s code
Users will also see a full-screen announcement warning them that they’re no longer transacting with Apple after clicking the external link.
Precedent and Future Implications
Netflix was among the first to adopt this new rule in 2022 by allowing sign-ups via its website. Google’s decision to offer direct purchases may have been influenced by the outcome of the lawsuit between Epic Games and Apple. The Supreme Court’s decision not to hear the appeal in January 2024 confirmed that Apple must allow app developers to link to their own websites if they choose. This ruling has significant implications for the future of in-app purchases and developer-app store relationships.
