Sony’s Record-Breaking Holiday Season

Sony has announced its best holiday season ever in terms of PlayStation 5 console sales, with 9.5 million units sold over the last three months (2024 Q3), as stated in its earnings release. This represents a significant increase of 1.3 million units compared to the same quarter last year, which was the company’s previous best holiday quarter. The total number of PS5 consoles sold has now reached 74.9 million.

Boost in Sales and Revenue

The launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro last fall is likely to have contributed to the boost in sales, although Sony did not provide specific numbers for that console. The record quarter has also propelled Sony to a higher-than-expected profit of 469.3 billion yen ($3.05 billion) across all divisions.

Game Sales and Revenue

The company saw a significant increase in game sales, with 95.9 million units sold in Q3 2024, compared to 89.7 million in the previous quarter. This boost in game sales has led to an increase in game software revenue, which reached 784 billion yen ($5.1 billion) in Q3 2024, up from 733 billion yen in Q3 2023. Sony highlighted the success of Astro Bot and Helldivers 2, and reaffirmed its commitment to expanding its family and live service game offerings. Despite axing some recent games, the company is looking to build on the success of these titles.

Looking Ahead

Sony expressed "high expectations" for game sales this year, with the release of first-party titles such as Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei, both set to launch in 2025. The company is also anticipating big third-party launches, including Grand Theft Auto 6, which is scheduled to arrive in fall 2025. With a strong lineup of games and a growing user base, Sony is well-positioned for continued success in the gaming market.
