Amazon has announced that it will be hosting an event on February 26 at 10AM ET, which is notably early in the year for the company. Typically, Amazon’s product launches occur in the fall, following the pattern of its industry peers. However, considering the last “devices and services” showcase took place in September 2023, this upcoming event can be seen as overdue. (Although there was a Kindle launch in October last year, it doesn’t quite fit the same category.) While the specifics of what Amazon plans to unveil are not yet clear, we can make some educated predictions. Let’s dive into the possibilities.

Firstly, the presence of Panos Panay, Amazon’s hardware chief, and his devices and services team at the event hints at the introduction of new gadgets. Nevertheless, the primary focus is likely to be on providing more information about the long-promised next-generation Alexa. This inference is based on the fact that Amazon sent out five different versions of a minimalist invitation to the event. Internet sleuths combined these images, revealing that the background spells out the word “Alexa.”

The AI-enhanced update to Alexa has experienced several delays since its initial announcement in 2023. It was reported that the development team encountered challenges in getting the updated chatbot to perform basic tasks, such as setting a timer and turning on smart lights, functions that the current Alexa has handled with ease for years. Furthermore, the team has also reportedly struggled with hallucinations.

According to Amazon, the new LLM-powered Alexa will have the capability to “process nuance and ambiguity—much like a human—and intelligently take action.” The company claims it will be able to complete complex requests, such as “Alexa, every weeknight at 9PM, announce bedtime for the kids, dim the lights upstairs, turn on the porch light, and switch on the fan in the bedroom.” If it works as promised, this could be a highly useful feature.

A new, advanced Alexa would likely require dedicated hardware to fully realize its potential, which explains the involvement of Panay and his team. It has been some time since the Echo line of smart speakers received an update, so a refresh is more than likely. Additionally, it’s possible that the budget-friendly and practical Echo Buds earbuds might receive an upgrade. We also saw the Echo Frames glasses at the September 2023 event, which offer hands-free access to Alexa. Given the significant developments in the smart glasses sector over the last year and a half, it’s possible the company might update this device as well.

What can we rule out? Amazon recently introduced new Kindles towards the end of last year. Seeing an e-reader at this event would be unexpected. While it’s possible the company could unveil new Fire tablets, this doesn’t align well with the Alexa-centric theme of the event.
