Google’s Gemini AI Chatbot Gains Recall Feature

Google has announced that its Gemini AI chatbot can now tailor answers based on the contents of previous conversations. In a blog post, the company revealed that Gemini can summarize a previous conversation you’ve had with it or recall information you shared in another conversation thread.

Revolutionizing User Experience

This new feature means you won’t have to repeat information you’ve already shared with Gemini or sift through old threads for additional information. With Gemini’s ability to recall conversations, the platform aims to become more fluid and personal, enhancing the overall user experience.

Rollout and Availability

Gemini’s recall feature is currently available to English-speaking subscribers of Google’s $20-a-month AI chatbot subscription, Google One AI Premium. In the coming weeks, Google plans to roll out the feature to additional languages and for users with enterprise accounts.

Addressing Privacy Concerns

Google acknowledges that the recall feature may raise concerns about user data. To address these concerns, the company allows users to review, delete, or decide how long to keep their chat history. Users can also turn off the recall feature altogether by visiting the "My Activity" page in Gemini. Furthermore, Google ensures that it never trains AI models based on user conversation histories.

Industry Trends and Comparison

Several AI chatbot providers have been experimenting with memory and recall features, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noting that improved memory is a highly requested feature for ChatGPT. Google and OpenAI have both enabled more general "memory" features for their AI chatbots in the past year, allowing them to remember details about users.

However, these existing memory features do not recall the full chat history by default. Unlike Gemini, existing features do not provide the same level of recall functionality.
